Etiquette is a code that influences expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group. Rules of etiquette are usually unwritten, but aspects of etiquette have been codified from time to time. Rules of etiquette encompass most aspects of social interaction in any society, though the term itself is not commonly used. A rule of etiquette may reflect an underlying ethical code, or it may reflect a fashion or status.
Personal ethical code
People often make ethical choices reflexively. The throes of an ethically sensitive situation is the worst time to think through your ethics. These situations are often time pressured, emotional, and complicated. It becomes all too easy to be blindsided by temptation.
The best antidote to ethical lapses is to commit in advance to a set of ethical principles -- your personal ethical code. Your code defines your standards of right and wrong. It helps you resist temptation and becomes your basis for making ethically sensitive decisions.
